Shooters Hill Sixth Form College allows students to dress in a way that is suitable for the learning environment in which they are participating. However, some settings may require specific dress regulations for health and safety reasons. Additionally, students must comply with any dress code regulations set by individual course programmes or placement providers. This policy should be followed alongside any other relevant guidelines.
Dress Expectations
-
Hoods must not be worn up, and caps or hats should be removed while on campus. Durags are permitted.
-
Coats cannot be worn in classrooms or workshops.
-
Headscarves are allowed only for genuine religious, cultural, or medical reasons, and any concerns will be addressed at the discretion of the Principal.
-
Clothing that contains offensive language, promotes illegal activity, or expresses inappropriate views such as racism, homophobia, or misogyny must be removed or covered up.

Clothing should be appropriate for a learning environment and should not be overly revealing.
Specific Clothing Guidelines
-
Clothing should not expose areas of the body that are deemed inappropriate for the college setting.
-
Pyjamas, flip-flops, open-toed sandals, crop tops, and shorts above mid-thigh length are not allowed.
-
Shorts may be worn, provided they are of a mid-thigh length.
Health and Safety Considerations
In practical settings like laboratories, workshops, kitchens, or outdoor activities, students must dress appropriately for their environment.
-
Clothing: Should be comfortable but may need to be adjusted for safety reasons. For example, shorts may not be permitted in laboratories due to the risk of chemical spillage. Headscarves must be secure and should not interfere with any personal protective equipment (PPE). Protective clothing such as lab coats, overalls, eyewear, or gloves may be required and should be handled properly when no longer needed. Loose clothing that could become entangled in machinery, such as long sleeves or ties, should not be worn.
-
Footwear: Must be low-heeled and protective, especially in environments where there is a risk of chemical spills or sharp/heavy objects. Appropriate footwear must also be worn for outdoor activities and indoor sports, as specified by supervising staff. Failure to comply may result in exclusion from these activities.
-
Jewellery: Students must comply with health and safety guidelines regarding jewellery. In some cases, it may need to be removed, especially during sports or when working with machinery.
-
Hair: Long hair must be tied back or secured if there is a risk of entanglement in equipment or machinery, or if contamination needs to be prevented. Additional clothing or equipment requirements may be specified in risk assessments.
Individual Placement Providers
Students must adhere to the dress code policies of any individual placement providers, which apply to placements and traineeships. Students should verify any dress code restrictions when applying for placements.
Examinations
Students must bring their Shooters Hill Sixth Form student ID card to every exam. Except for professional body restrictions, students may be required to remove facial coverings for identification purposes. Cooperation with staff during exams is expected to avoid any disruption.
Security and Identification
All students must wear their ID cards while on campus. The photo on the card must clearly show the full face. Staff may request to verify a student’s identity at any time.
Failure to adhere to dress code regulations or complaints regarding this policy may result in disciplinary action. For repeated violations, such as not removing hoods, a student may be prohibited from wearing hooded clothing on campus. Complaints can be addressed through the college’s standard complaint's procedure.
