Overview
This course is 1 year and allows students to progress onto the L3 Creative Practice (if they’re under 19 at enrolment) or to progress onto a Foundation course elsewhere at a college or university. You should ideally have both your Maths & English GCSEs at grade 4. but you can resit one if still required. It will involve experiences of graphics, art and other specialist content and in January you choose a theme and choose your pathway area; making the course more bespoke to your interests.
Course Content
Unit 1 – 60% various pathways and skills development. In recent years this has involved graphics, art, printmaking, fashion/textiles and some design. This is to help inform you about what your strengths are you enjoy. For example, how do you know you’re not a sculptor until you try some? It is designed to give you a set of broad skills and inform you about your preferred career pathway. You explore this in Unit 2.
Unit 2 – 40% of students choose their own theme and pathways direction. Having explored various skills in Unit 1 they are now asked to apply them independently. There are still workshops to support or scaffold learning but are more focussed on sustaining expected skills such as analysis or (for example) introducing students to processes which can be applied to all pathways or projects.
Unit 2 is set by UAL and there are 3 broad themes to choose from. However, these are very open to interpretation, and it is suggested that students develop their style, their pathway and the theme may evolve into new directions and ideas. One of the key skills we are looking for is your ability to develop ideas, reflect on the impact of what they have learned and apply it to your next steps.
Grading is Pass, High Pass, Merit, High Merit, Distinction and is equivalent to studying a single A Level in one year.
