
Overview
Our A Level Art & Design course helps students develop skills in Fine Art, Architecture, Photography, and Design. It encourages creativity through exploring various media, from traditional techniques to digital design. The course emphasises technical skills, critical thinking, and art theory, helping you create a diverse, personal portfolio. It fosters personal expression and prepares you for future careers in art or design. The teacher’s mantra, “You don’t have to like it, but you do have to understand it,” encourages critical engagement with visual culture.
Course Content
This is a two-year art and design course that covers a wide range of techniques in fine art, photography, digital media, and design, with a focus on both creative exploration and portfolio development for professional or academic progression.
Year 1 Content:

Introduction to Art & Design: Broad exploration of materials and techniques (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and digital media)

Fine Art: Exploration of 2D, 3D, and mixed media techniques

Drawing (observational and expressive)

Painting (watercolour, acrylic, oil)

Sculpture (clay, plaster, mixed media)

Photography: Digital and darkroom techniques, image manipulation, and composition

Art Theory: Study of key artists and movements, with an emphasis on visual analysis and critical thinking

Personal Project: Students begin developing their creative concepts and portfolios
Year 2 Content:

Fine Art Continued: Further development of 2D, 3D, and mixed media techniques.

Photography & Digital Media: Advanced digital manipulation, experimental photography, and multimedia projects

Design (Specialisation): Focus on graphic design product design, or fashion, depending on individual interest

Extended Project: Final major project based on a personal theme, supported by extensive research, development, and experimentation

Art Theory & Evaluation: Further critical analysis of contemporary art, trends, and practices

Portfolio Development: Focus on creating a polished portfolio for university or professional applications
The course consists of 2 units, where your portfolio will make up 60% of your final grade, and 40% will be based on the exam unit.
Requirements
To enrol in the A-Level Art & Design course, you’ll need:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, Art or Design-related subjects

A passion for creativity, an open mind, and a willingness to explore various media and artistic techniques. A portfolio of artwork may be requested as part of the application process.
